Gavin to the fore at the Royal Greens in Saudi International

Gavin Green was pleased enough with a six-under 64 to the extent that he was willing to forget the two disappointing three-putts on the back nine on the first day of the Saudi International on Thursday.

The 26-yeear-old, who has a bit of Portuguese, Irish and Chinese in him, played for Malaysia at the 2016 Olympics and has been on the European Tour for two years now since winning the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2017.

First out in the morning, Green had eight birdies, five of the on the front nine of the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club. Turning around he birdied the tenth to get to six-under, before stumbling with three-putts on 12thand 14th. He closed with birdies on 16 and 17 and saw the six-foot birdie putt horse shoe out for a par.

His 66 had him as the best of the morning wave and was one ahead of Swedish duo Sebastian Soderberg and Henrik Stenson and Spaniard Adri Arnaus.

After finishing his previous round, the last one at Dubai in a stunning one hour 35 minutes, Soderberg was back to normal in the company of another Swede Alexander Bjork and Stephen Gallacher, as he had six birdies and one bogey in his 65.
