Cameron Champ becomes second Covid positive test on PGA Tour

The PGA  Tour’s longest hitter, Cameron Champ, has become the second player on Tour to test positive for COVID-19 during pre-tournament screening ahead of the Travelers Championship. Champ, Champ tested positive in the pre-tournament screening on Tuesday.

The PGA Tour said Champ will have the PGA TOUR’s full support throughout his self-isolation period under CDC guidelines.

In the PGA Tour statement, Champ was quoted as saying, ““I feel great physically and I was obviously surprised and disappointed to learn of the test result. It’s important now to take the necessary steps and measures to protect others, including my loved ones.”

Meanwhile, the TOUR is expected to release full testing results at the completion of the pre-tournament testing process on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Champ won his maiden PGA Tour title at the Sanderson Farms in 2018 and added the Safeway Championships in September, 2019. The  World’s No. 79 player was T-14 at Charles Schwab Challenge  and then skipped the RBC Heritage last week.

Last week Nick Watney became the first PGA Tour to test positive on Friday before the second round of the RBC Heritage event.

The two tests have raised concern, even though spectators are not allowed for the first few weeks.

Even before news of Champ’s situation emerged, Jordan Spieth had his Tuesday press conference ahead of Travelers Championships. He suggested protocols might be tightened on account of Watney’s positive test, saying, “Yeah, we’ve had calls every Monday, so we had one after Colonial and then we just had one yesterday, and I think it’s going to — we’re going to continue to make minor adjustments. I think the idea of extra testing has come around.

“The idea of mandatory tests for anyone who was even within six feet, whether they made physical contact with somebody who had a positive test, making those kind of mandatory, because the testing is very, very easy. It goes very quickly. Sure, it’s uncomfortable for a second, but being able to mitigate the risk is the number one priority. We’ve looked into having dinner options so that you don’t have to go grab-to-go food to keep the bubble even smaller.”

“There are adjustments that are being talked about and will be — they’ll be made as we move on. When we run into potentially having fans, that’ll change things up a bit, too.”
