I tried calling earlier and I didn’t get through (to his parents) because they were at a lunch with my grandma. I said I would get hold of her after the round and even better in the winner’s enclosure. Definitely a birthday present for the both of them – my dad’s 60th on Friday and my mum’s birthday today (Sunday, May 31). Hopefully it provides a beautiful present. Nice to see them and looking forward to getting in touch with friends and family and nice to pull it off today.
I wasn’t in the U.S. Open – I’d just dropped down the world rankings and I hadn’t even qualified yet. I hope this win gets me back into position where I can play in the U.S. Open again. I want to take it week by week but being a major event, I always said I feel like I’ve not performed to the level I would like to be at and it’s nice to hopefully get the U.S. Open and get there in a couple of weeks and bring the positive energy there and push on.
It’s an awesome week obviously, I wasn’t really coming in on my best form missing the cut last week and not really performing to what I would like to. It was definitely a week where I felt like a chance to find something again and that’s what happened.
I played steady golf, I had a really good mindset out there all week and it’s really enjoyable to put the foot down on the back nine and make a couple of birdies, it felt really nice. It’s just an enjoyable golf course for me and it feels like I can really score well and I think that got me over the line this week.
That’s ultimately what we all want to do so if you’re comfortable with it I think you’ve got a chance to bring your best golf. I was very calm, I had a good talk with my caddie on Friday about what wasn’t so good the last couple of weeks and it was just push forward and be positive and decisive – that was our goal regardless of the outcome. Just commit to the shots – I wasn’t perfect out there but I got away with a few things and scrambled well and dug in there and that was all I wanted to do and even better when it worked out that way.
