Anika Varma drops to T-30 at SW Amateurs in Arizona

Scottsdale, Arizona, June 18: It was a roller-coaster of a round that ended at 6-over 77 and saw Indian amateur Anika Varma drop from overnight T-21 to T-30 at the 107-year-old Southwestern Women’s Amateur Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona. After making the cut, Anika was unable to take advantage on the moving day as she had two double bogeys, a triple bogey besides three other bogeys, which took away the gains from four birdies.

Anika, who had been doing well on the back nine of the Desert Mountain Club’s Geronimo course, suffered a bogey, a double bogey and a triple bogey on the back nine where she also had three birdies.

Varma is also due to play the US Girls Junior Championship in Kentucky next month.

Camille Boyd (68-69-66), lying third after two rounds, took over the leader as the overnight leader Grace Summerhays (64-71-75) faltered on the third day. Summerhays dropped to T-6. Tied for second are Ty Akabane (70-66-71) and McKenzi Hall (7-72-65).

Round 2 – Annika Varma T-21 makes cut SW Amateurs in Arizona

Scottsdale, Arizona, June 17: Indian amateur Anika Varma added even par 71 to her first round 72 to make the halfway cut at the Southwestern Women’s Amateur Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona. Anika is lying T-21 as the top 36 and ties make the cut.

Anika, who is based in the United  States, once again struggled on the front stretch of the Desert Mountain Club’s Geronimo course.  as she shot 1-over 72 and was T-18 after the first day in the Southwestern Women’s Amateur Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Starting from the tenth she had four birdies against just one bogey for 3-under 32 before the turn. Then she had four bogeys to go 1-over for the day. She birdied the last, the ninth for a round of even par.

Varma is also due to play the US Girls Junior Championship in Kentucky next month and she was T-9 at the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship in Abu Dhabi last year.

The leader is Grace Summerhays (64-71) and she was one shot ahead of Ty Akabane (70-66). Camille Boyd (68-69) was lying third.

The South-Western Amateur Golf is 107 years old and considered very prestigious.

 Scottsdale, Arizona: Indian amateur Anika Varma, who is based in United  States, found the going tough on the front side of the Desert Mountain Club’s Geronimo course as she shot 1-over 72 and was T-18 after the first day in the Southwestern Women’s Amateur Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Varma, who is also due to play the US Girls Junior Championship in Kentucky next month, had four bogeys, including three on the front side and all three birdies came on the back nine. Varma was T-9 at the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship in Abu Dhabi last year.

The leader is Grace Summerhays, who holed eight birdies in her round of 7-under 64. Camille Boyd and Huang Ting-Hsuan shot 68 and were four shots behind in Tied-second place.

The top 36 and ties go into the final two rounds of the Arizona event from the 72-strong field. The event is being organised by the 107-year-old South-Western Golf Association.
